KTV

KTV.  I like to think it stands for "Katie Television," but alas, it stands for "Karaoke Television."  Karaoke is a traditionally Japanese form of entertainment.  In the states, we associate karaoke with a drunken night at some place like The Cat's Meow on Bourbon Street - at least I do.  But not in Asia.  Karaoke is a perfectly respectable form of entertainment, one done often without alcohol.  Which is better?  Asian karaoke, fo sho.

Believe me, I was hesitant to go.  I thought it was going to be a night of drunken debauchery.  But it was my friend Geoff's birthday, and Geoff is leaving next year, so of course I wanted to go.  I decided I just wouldn't sing, vowing instead to sit in the back and watch people make asses of themselves.  We walked into this plush private karaoke room with a small movie screen, 4 microphones, an awesome sound system, leather sofas, and tons of food and beverages.  Five minutes later, I was belting out "It's Raining Men" like I was auditioning for American Idol or something.  It was SO MUCH FUN!!!

Needless to say, karaoke is my new obsession.  Already I'm planning a back to school karaoke night in late August.  Here are some of the songs on the list for next time:  It's Raining Men, I Will Survive, Heal the World, Lady Marmalade, Say you Say me, Ebony and Ivory, Jackson 5 songs, Piano Man, Defying Gravity, Don't Cry for me Argentina, Mickey, and countless other cheesy 80s songs.

Jaami, Janelle, Adam, and Jennifer lounging and snacking

Geoff and Jen.  Coolest couple ever!!!

Yuen Yuen, Geoff, Jen, Adam, Me, and Jaami

Geoff, Jennifer, Jaami, and Janelle

Yuen Yuen singing some song in Chinese.  All I understood from it was "Wo ai ni" which means "I love you."

Corey and Janelle.  Cory and I went crazy with Broadway tunes.  We're doing the fall play, Much Ado About Nothing, together next year.  We are going to have a blast!!  He is downright HILARIOUS!

Me and Jaami.  He's singing "Lady Marmalade" like a rockstar, and I'm just pretending to sing.  No one could top Jaami's voice...except Bill Phillbock, whose not in any of my pics, but yes that's really his name.

this looks like so much fun! between this and the themed restaurants, i feel like people in taipei have a unique sense of humor.

that is so cool you are putting on Much Ado About Nothing! I cant wait to hear about that. i wonder what drama and acting techniques they have that are maybe different than ours...
