Mallorca

Who:  Just little ole me!

What:  A desperate attempt to relish in the summer sun before school starts

When:  August 4 - 10, 2015

Where:  Puerto de Soller, Mallorca (or Majorca); The Aimia Hotel

Why:  Because it was the cheapest European beach vacation spot I could find for a relatively last minute booking...especially for the first week in August when all the Europeans are on holiday.

How:  Flew Air Berlin from Zurich to Palma de Mallorca, then took a cab about 40 kilometers to Port Soller.  Easy peasy!  There is also a cheaper option, to bus it from the airport.  I was afraid it would be too complicated to figure out.  Now that I'm here, I don't think it would have been that complicated, but it would have taken over an hour longer, assuming there was a bus leaving exactly when I wanted it.  Also, my flight took off late, and our luggage took FOREVER to come out, so I was pretty eager to get to the hotel and eat a meal.  If I came with a group of people and we were keen to save some money, I'd take the bus.  Otherwise, the extra 20 euros was totally worth it.

First Impressions:  I chose the perfect location.  I'm so glad I didn't stay in Palma de Mallorca, which is where all the fancy all-inclusive resorts are.  I was on the plane with A LOT of families with small children and with groups of college-aged German boys.  I am happy to report that there are few families and no college age kids here in Port Soller.  It's a charming little port town with lots of cafes, gelato shops, an old town, an old fashioned train that runs to Soller and back, and lots of cyclists.  My hotel is nice - nothing extravagant, but it has everything I wanted (except a view of the port), and the girl who works Mondays to Fridays at the front desk is AWESOME.  I love her already.  I'm also happy that I rented a bike for the whole week.  I can easily bike around here...but I wish I had brought my new bike shorts with the padding in the butt (ouch!).  Pretty much everyone speaks English, so it's very easy.  Aside from all the English, it definitely feels like Spain...so SCORE for the trip to Mallorca.  At least so far...
