Summer 2012: Adventure Planning
So when I was finished having an anxiety attack about the 30 hour flight to Kilimanjaro (via Amsterdam...what was I thinking?), I decided to change my plans. No Round the World tickets. Sarah and I have chosen instead to book 2 separate round trip tickets this summer. We've also booked the first part of our Africa adventure. Here's the official plan:
1. Saturday 6/2: Fly Kenyan Airways from TPE to BKK to NBO to JRO (Taipei to Bangkok to Nairobi to Kilimanjaro). The longest portion is BKK to NBO, and it's only 9.5 hrs. Praise Jesus!
2. Sunday 6/3: Arrive at JRO at 9am, where we will be picked up by the Marangu Hotel. They will drive us 80km to the hotel in Moshi. We'll spend the rest of 6/3 and 6/4 gearing up for our Kili climb!
3. Tuesday 6/5 to Sunday 6/10: Climb Kili and pray we don't get severe altitude sickness.
4. Sunday 6/10 and Monday 6/11: Bathe...a lot. And rest. And eat. And bathe. Prep for safari.
5. Tuesday 6/12 to Sunday 6/17: Safari!! First we'll go to Lake Manyara to see flamingos and hippos. We'll stay the night on the outskirts of the Serengeti and head out the next day to the Ngorongora Crater. From there, we'll enter the heart of the Serengeti for 3 days or so. We'll fly out on a prop plane and into JRO, where we'll hop another flight to Zanzibar.
6. Monday 6/18 to Friday 6/22: Zanzibar!!! Sightsee, photograph, scuba dive, eat, veg on beach, etc.
7. Friday, 6/22 to Saturday 6/23: Zanzibar to JRO to NBO to BKK to TPE.
8. Sunday 6/24: Relax, recover, repack.
9. Monday 6/25: Fly Delta TPE to NRT to ATL. The longest portion is NRT to ATL - 12 hours...ugh!! Pray that I get bumped up to business class.
10. One week or so in Atlanta, and then fly to Milwaukee for a few days.
11. Spend the remaining 5 weeks of my summer parked in Dunwoody refusing to leave or do anything except read, write, plan my move to Eastern Europe, shop, and of course hang out with my family and play with Alice.
12. Wednesday, 8/8: Fly Delta ATL to NRT to TPE...hopefully my penultimate TPE/ATL trip. One more trip home in June 2013, then off to Budapest...or Prague, or Vienna, or Istanbul, or some other awesome Eastern European City (Zagreb, Riga, Bucharest).
Aside from the 36 hour turnaround time in Taipei, I am absolutely Thrilled about my Adventurous and relaxing Summer of 2012.
(If you're wondering why Adventurous and Thrilled are capitalized, it's because I'm teaching Emily Dickinson. She's impacting my writing -- Style.)
